I Know What It Feels Like When the Role That Built the Firm Starts to Feel Too Small

My life in law was not something I fell into half-heartedly. It was work I cared about deeply, and for many years, it gave me responsibility, purpose, challenge, and the chance to make a real impact in people’s lives. I knew what it meant to build a reputation, serve clients, lead a team, and become the person others depended on.

From the outside, that kind of success can look like the destination. But over time, I began to understand that the same role that helped me build the firm could also start to feel limiting. I was still carrying the decisions, protecting the standards, and staying closely involved in the work, the people, the clients, and the future of the firm. The firm was successful, but I had to ask myself whether this was still the role I wanted to keep living.

I did not leave law because I was burned out or because I had stopped caring. I loved practicing law, and I loved owning and leading my firm. I also came to see that even a successful legal career can become a very small box if you never stop to ask what you truly want next.

For many successful lawyers, the problem is not ambition, intelligence, or work ethic. Those are often the very things that enabled you to build the firm in the first place. The harder truth is that the skills that made you an excellent attorney are not always the same skills required to lead a firm, develop a team, make clearer decisions, and create a life that is not constantly shaped by everyone else’s needs.

That is why I do this work now. I guide law firm founders and managing partners to step back from the old role they have been filling, see what is really keeping them tied to the firm, and begin leading from a clearer CEO role. This is about evolving into a better version of yourself and becoming the leader your firm, your team, and your next chapter now need.

Coach bio

John R. Kormanik

Professional Coach for Law Firm Founders and Managing Partners.

I have spent my career in high-responsibility environments. Before law, I worked in healthcare as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, led a team of world-class professionals and worked in the high-stress environment of a Trauma Unit. I went on to spend 25 years practicing law, including 16 years owning and leading my own successful firm.

That experience matters because I do not coach law firm leaders from the outside looking in. I understand the identity, pressure, responsibility, and complexity that come with having your name, reputation, team, clients, and future tied to the firm you built.

My coaching is designed for founders and managing partners who have already achieved success, but now need to evolve from world-class attorney to elite CEO.

This is not generic business advice or remedial coaching. It is coaching for the person at the center of the firm, so you can lead with greater clarity, confidence, and freedom.
